The University of Alabama at Huntsville was founded in 1950 as the Huntsville Center of the University of Alabama. Initially, the school offered graduate courses in engineering, mathematics, and physics. In 1961, the school transitioned to a four-year institution and became known as the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH). During this time, the university added additional undergraduate programs in business administration, education, and biology.

In 1969 UAH established a School of Nursing and began offering nursing degrees. In 1983, UAH became an independent institution with its own Board of Trustees. This allowed for greater autonomy over decision-making and budgeting for the university. During this time, several new programs were added such as aerospace engineering and computer science.

In 1989 UAH opened its first residence hall on campus with room for 200 students.
