The University of North Alabama has a long and distinguished history. Founded in 1830 as LaGrange College, it was the first state-funded college in Alabama and the first four-year liberal arts college in the state. The school was renamed Florence Wesleyan University in 1872, and then Florence State Normal School in 1889. In 1930, the school was moved to its current location in Florence, Alabama and renamed Florence State Teachers College. In 1949, the school was officially designated as a university and renamed the University of North Alabama.
