Alabama State University Acceptance Rate, Average GPA, SAT and ACT Scores

Alabama State University was founded in 1867 by nine freedmen who were former slaves. It was established to provide educational opportunities for African Americans in the south following the Civil War. The school was initially called the Lincoln Normal School of Marion, and its main purpose was to train teachers. In 1873, the school’s name changed to Alabama State Normal School. It offered a two-year college curriculum and quickly became one of the most popular schools in Alabama for African American students.

In 1890, Alabama State Normal School became Alabama State College, and its enrollment grew significantly due to an influx of students from other states in the south. The college had several successful athletic programs, such as football and baseball teams that competed against other colleges across the country. In 1929, after years of growth and expansion, the college became known as Alabama State University (ASU). ASU continued to grow throughout the twentieth century and now serves over 6,000 students from all backgrounds. The university has also become well-known for its academic excellence; it boasts a number of highly-respected schools and colleges including business administration, education, engineering and sciences. ASU is also home to a vibrant student life with numerous clubs and organizations as well as a variety of cultural events throughout the year.
