The University of Alabama was founded in 1831 and is the oldest and largest public university in the state. It was established as a seminary of learning for men by the Alabama Legislature, and it later became a four-year degree-granting institution. The first classes were held in 1832, with six faculty members and forty students. Over the next several decades, the university grew significantly, eventually becoming one of the nation’s leading public universities. In 1837, The University of Alabama became one of the first universities in America to offer degrees in science and engineering. In 1856, it began offering degrees to women for the first time.
