The University of West Alabama was founded in 1835, as the Livingston Female Academy. It was the first institution of higher education in the state of Alabama to be open to women. From 1841 to 1861, the school was known as Livingston Literary and Theological Institute and offered courses in theology, literature and science. In 1861, the school closed due to the Civil War and reopened in 1865 as Livingston Normal College. During this time period, the school began offering classes in teacher education and business. In 1895, the college changed its name to Livingston State Normal College and began offering a broader range of courses including mathematics, history and physical sciences. In 1938, it became a four-year institution and changed its name once again to Livingston State Teachers College. The college continued to expand its course offerings until it became a university in 1995 and received its current name: The University of West Alabama (UWA).
