Willamette University was founded in 1842 as the first university in the western United States. It was originally chartered by the Oregon Territorial Legislature and located in Salem, Oregon. The school’s name comes from the nearby Willamette River, which had been named for a French-Canadian trapper. In its early years, Willamette University was a small school with limited resources and few students. However, it quickly grew in size and stature over the years to become one of the top universities in the region.
