Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) was established in 1974 as the successor to the University of Oregon Medical School, which had been founded in 1887. OHSU has grown from a small medical school to become one of the leading academic health centers in the nation, with a mission to improve the health and well-being of all Oregonians through excellence, innovation and leadership in health care, education and research. Over its history, the university has made numerous contributions to scientific research and health care practices. In 1975, OHSU opened a new hospital on Marquam Hill—now known as OHSU Hospital—which serves as one of the top teaching hospitals in the country. The hospital was built with state-of-the-art technology to provide advanced patient care for people from all walks of life. In addition, OHSU operates several outpatient clinics throughout Oregon that provide primary care services for individuals and families.

In 1985, OHSU established the Center for Research on Women’s Health (CRWH), which is dedicated to improving women’s health through research and education initiatives. The CRWH focuses on issues such as breast cancer prevention, reproductive health, violence against women, cardiovascular disease prevention and other women’s health topics. In 2001, OHSU launched its Center for Spatial Systems Biomedicine (CSSB), which is devoted to better understanding human biology by combining biomedical data with geographic information systems (GIS). CSSB has made numerous breakthroughs in areas such as cancer biology, neuroscience and genetics. In 2008, OHSU opened its Knight Cancer Institute—one of only 50 comprehensive cancer centers designated by the National Cancer Institute—to further explore cancer diagnosis and treatment options for patients in Oregon and beyond. Today, OHSU is committed to transforming healthcare through groundbreaking research initiatives that will benefit people around the world for generations to come. Check dictionaryforall for information about SAT.
