Indiana University-Purdue University at Fort Wayne (IPFW) first opened its doors in 1964 as Indiana University-Fort Wayne. The university was established through a cooperative agreement between Indiana University and Purdue University. IPFW offered classes from both universities, providing students with a unique educational experience. In 1968, the university’s name was officially changed to IPFW.

Over the years, IPFW has grown significantly in size and stature. In the early 1970s, the university added several new programs such as nursing, engineering and business administration. In 1975, IPFW moved to its current location in Fort Wayne and began construction of a new campus that would eventually grow to include an expanded library, theater complex and student center.
