Creighton University was founded in 1878 by the Society of Jesus. It was originally named Creighton College after its founder, Edward Creighton, a prominent Omaha businessman and philanthropist. The college was housed in what is now known as Old Main, the oldest building on campus. In 1917, the college became Creighton University and began offering graduate degrees in medicine and law. The university has since grown to include nine colleges and schools offering over 150 academic programs to its more than 8,000 undergraduate and graduate students.
