University of Vilnius
Vilnius University (Lithuania) — detailed description, address, opening hours, how to get there. Information about curricula and courses, reviews.
Vilnius University is one of the oldest in Eastern Europe. It is located on a vast territory with many alleys, cozy courtyards, fountains and air arches. Particular attention should be paid to the central courtyard – it is formed by several buildings and the bell tower of St. John. This place dates back to around the 17th century, and here you can see commemorative plaques about all the eminent graduates. In total, 13 courtyards belong to the territory of the university, each of which is attractive in its own way.
The Sarbeviy Yard, named after the famous Polish poet, who is highly respected here, is rightfully considered the most ancient. There is also a very nice little bookstore that sells books and souvenirs. Medicinal herbs were grown in the courtyard of the Observatory in past years. Visually, this place has not changed a bit over several centuries, but the herb garden has long since disappeared.
The external appearance of the university mixed different architectural styles: from classicism to baroque. This is due to the fact that the university complex was not built at the same time, the construction of buildings stretched for almost 4 centuries.
Be sure to visit the university library. It is located in a very beautiful building, decorated with frescoes on biblical scenes. Many unique historical documents and manuscripts are also stored here.
Among the graduates of Vilnius University there are many who can be proud of: Polish poets Juliusz Slovacki and Adam Mickiewicz, Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko and many other respected people.
