Winthrop University Acceptance Rate, Average GPA, SAT and ACT Scores

Winthrop University was founded in 1886 as a teaching college for women. It was named for former South Carolina governor and U.S. Senator Robert Winthrop, who provided the original funding for the school’s construction. The first classes were held in Columbia, South Carolina in 1891 with an enrollment of just over one hundred students. In its early years, Winthrop focused on training teachers and providing educational opportunities to women who otherwise would have been denied them.

In 1916 Winthrop moved to its current location in Rock Hill, South Carolina and began offering a wider range of degree programs to both men and women. Over the next several decades, the university continued to grow and expand its academic offerings by adding new departments such as Business Administration, Nursing, Physical Education and Music. In 1974, Winthrop became coeducational when it admitted its first male students into the nursing program. Over the following decades, Winthrop experienced rapid growth in both student population and campus size as well as introducing new majors such as Computer Science, Criminal Justice, Environmental Studies and Theatre Arts. Today Winthrop University is a comprehensive public university that offers more than 80 undergraduate degree programs across five colleges: Arts & Sciences; Education; Business Administration; Visual & Performing Arts; and Graduate Studies & Research. See topschoolsintheusa for GRE test centers in Illinois.
