Winston-Salem State University was founded in 1892 as Slater Industrial Academy. The school’s mission was to provide education for African Americans, and it was the first public historically black university in North Carolina. In 1925, the school changed its name to Winston-Salem Teachers College and began offering bachelor’s degrees in education. In 1969, the college became Winston-Salem State University, and it now offers 40 undergraduate majors and 10 graduate programs.
