Winona State University was founded in 1858 as the Winona Normal School, a teacher’s college. It was the first normal school west of the Mississippi River and the second in Minnesota. Over the years, it has grown and evolved to become one of Minnesota’s largest universities. In 1960, it became Winona State College, and in 1975 it gained its current name, Winona State University. In 1976, three campuses were added: the Rochester Campus, the West Center in Winona, and the Winona Graduate Center.
The university has seen many changes since its founding over 150 years ago. In 1998, WSU won an NCAA Division II National Championship in men’s basketball. In 2000, WSU opened its newest building – Kryzsko Commons – which is now home to dining services and student activities. The university also offers more than 100 undergraduate programs as well as dozens of graduate programs and certificates. To meet students’ needs for flexible learning opportunities WSU launched their online degree program in 2002 which has since grown to include over thirty degree options with more being added each year. As a result of its commitment to academic excellence and service to students, WSU was honored with being named a “Best Midwestern College” by The Princeton Review for nine consecutive years from 2006–2014.
