William Penn University was founded in 1873 as Penn College in Oskaloosa, Iowa. It was established by Quakers who wanted to create a college that would provide a quality education to rural students. Initially, the college offered only two-year degrees, but it was later expanded to offer four-year degree programs in the liberal arts and sciences. In 1889, the school changed its name to William Penn College in honor of William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania.
