Whittier College was founded in 1887 as a Quaker college in Whittier, California. It was originally named the Friends Pacific Academy and had an enrollment of only 10 students. The college was renamed Whittier College in 1891 and granted its charter by the state of California in 1901. By the 1920s, enrollment had grown to over 500 students, and the college became coeducational in 1921. In the following years, Whittier College continued to grow and expand its academic offerings. In 1948, it established its first graduate program with a Master’s of Education degree. The college also opened a Law School in 1966 and an Institute for Global Engagement in 2015.
The campus underwent major renovations throughout the 20th century, including new buildings for classrooms, dormitories, a library, athletic facilities and student centers. In recent years, Whittier has also invested heavily into sustainability efforts on campus through initiatives such as energy-efficient lighting systems and water conservation projects.
