Westmont College was founded in 1937 by Dr. Wallace Emerson, a former pastor and his wife, Ruth. The college was originally named Westmont Junior College and was located in Montecito, California. It was established as a two-year institution to provide an affordable and accessible education to the people of Santa Barbara County.
Since its founding, Westmont College has grown significantly in size, scope and reputation. In 1960, it became an independent four-year liberal arts college and changed its name to Westmont College. During this period of growth, the college added several new programs such as business administration, pre-medicine and education. In addition to these new programs, the college also expanded its campus with new buildings for dorms and classrooms. In the late 1960s and early 1970s Westmont began offering graduate degrees in business administration and education as well as a master’s degree in Christian studies.
