Westminster College was founded in 1851 by the Rev. William A. Passavant, a Lutheran pastor from Pittsburgh, PA. He wanted to create a college that focused on educating students for the ministry and providing a liberal arts education for the general public. The college was initially located in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania and was called the Western Theological Seminary of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. In 1868, it moved to its current location in Fulton, Missouri and was renamed Westminster College after an English Presbyterian school of the same name.
Since then, Westminster has grown into one of America’s leading liberal arts colleges with over 1,000 full-time students enrolled each year. The college has also expanded its academic offerings to include majors in business administration, computer science, engineering, education and many more fields of study. Westminster also offers strong pre-professional programs such as pre-law and pre-medicine to provide students with a strong foundation for future success in their chosen field of study.
