Westfield State University was founded in 1838 as the first public higher education institution in Massachusetts. It is the first college to admit students regardless of race, gender, or socio-economic status. It was originally called the Westfield Normal School and its primary purpose was to train teachers for public schools in Massachusetts. Over the years, the school’s focus shifted from teacher training to a more general liberal arts curriculum.
In 1932, Westfield Normal School became known as Westfield State Teachers College and added a four-year degree program with graduates earning a Bachelor of Education degree. In 1960, Westfield State earned university status and changed its name to Westfield State College. The college offered master’s degrees for the first time in 1961 and began offering doctoral programs in 1967.
In 2010, the college officially changed its name to Westfield State University after receiving approval from both the state legislature and Governor Deval Patrick. This change marked a new era of growth and development for the university.
