Western New Mexico University (WNMU) was founded in 1893 as the New Mexico Normal School. It was established to provide educational opportunities for the children of the local mining communities. The school initially operated out of a single two-room adobe building, offering a two-year program with an emphasis on training teachers. In 1909, the school’s name was changed to New Mexico State Normal School and College, and its curriculum was expanded to include four-year degrees in education and liberal arts.
