Western New England University was founded in 1919 by the Springfield YMCA. It was originally called the International YMCA College and served as a training school for the international YMCA organization. The school was located in Springfield, Massachusetts, and offered classes in physical education, business, and religion. In 1922, the college moved to its current location of Springfield and changed its name to Western New England College. During this time, it began offering four-year degree programs in business administration and engineering.
In 1951, the college became an independent non-profit institution and changed its name to Western New England University. Over the next several decades, the university grew rapidly with new buildings being constructed on campus and new academic programs being added to its curriculum. Today, Western New England University is home to over 5500 students from all over the world who are pursuing degrees ranging from undergraduate certificates to doctoral degrees.
