Western Illinois University (WIU) was founded in 1899 as the Western Illinois State Normal School. The school was created to meet the growing demand for teachers in the rural areas of western Illinois. WIU quickly grew and established itself as a leader in teacher education, with its graduates becoming teachers throughout the region. In 1927, the school changed its name to Western Illinois State Teachers College and began offering bachelor’s degrees in education. It later added other degree programs such as business administration, home economics, and physical education. In 1957, Western became a four-year university and changed its name to Western Illinois University. The following year, WIU began offering master’s degrees in education and other fields of study.

In 1967, WIU opened its first residence hall for students on campus and followed that up with several more residence halls over the years. The university also expanded its academic offerings to include more than 100 undergraduate programs and 25 graduate programs, including doctoral programs in educational leadership and public health administration. WIU has developed an international reputation for excellence due to its strong academic programs, diverse student body, and commitment to community service. Western Illinois University has an enrollment of over 8,000 students, making it the second-largest university in the state.
