West Virginia University (WVU) was established in 1867 as the Agricultural College of West Virginia. It was the first land-grant university in the state and the second such institution created under the Morrill Act of 1862. The college offered courses in agriculture, mechanical arts, and classical studies. In 1891, it was renamed West Virginia University to reflect its wider range of academic offerings. Since then, WVU has grown to become a major research university with more than 35,000 students enrolled. It offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in many disciplines including business, engineering, education, nursing, pharmacy, public health and medicine.
In addition to its academic offerings, WVU is also home to many athletic teams that compete at the Division I level in various sports. The Mountaineers football team won three national championships in 1947, 1949 and 1959 and has been a consistent contender for conference titles ever since. Basketball is another popular sport at WVU with multiple Final Four appearances over the years. The school also fields teams for baseball, soccer and other sports as well as intramural clubs for students who want to participate in recreational activities on campus.
