West Texas A&M University (WTAMU) has a long and distinguished history of providing educational opportunities to students from the Texas Panhandle and beyond. Founded in 1910 as West Texas State Normal College, WTAMU was one of the first four state-supported institutions of higher learning in Texas. The original mission of the college was to prepare teachers for public schools in rural areas. Over the course of its history, the university has grown and evolved to meet the changing needs of its students. In 1923, WTAMU became West Texas State Teachers College, and in 1949 it changed its name again to West Texas State College. In 1965, it was renamed West Texas State University before assuming its current name in 1993.
In recent years, WTAMU has continued to expand its offerings while remaining committed to its core mission. It now offers more than 50 undergraduate degree programs ranging from business administration and engineering to art and education. Additionally, it has several graduate programs including those in counseling psychology, business administration, nursing education and kinesiology.
