Wesleyan College was founded in 1836 and is the oldest college in the world chartered to grant degrees to women. It was established by the Methodist Episcopal Church in Macon, Georgia, and has a long history of educating young women. The college was originally known as Georgia Female College and offered classes in literature, science, fine arts, music, and languages. In 1917, it became Wesleyan College following a merger with another school.
