Waynesburg University was founded in 1849 by the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, making it one of the earliest universities in the state of Pennsylvania. The university was originally known as “The Baptist Education Society of Greene County” and was located in Waynesburg, PA. It provided a classical education to its students and focused on preparing them for Christian ministry. In 1866, the university changed its name to Waynesburg College and began offering a wider range of courses such as science, philosophy, music, engineering and law. The college continued to grow throughout the late 19th century and into the 20th century with new buildings being constructed and courses being added. In 1925, Waynesburg College became Waynesburg University following a reorganization which saw it become a four-year institution offering both undergraduate and graduate degrees.
