Wayne State University was established in 1868 as the Detroit Medical College. The main goal of the college was to train doctors and other medical professionals in Detroit. Over the years, the college grew and expanded its offerings, eventually becoming Wayne University in 1934. Wayne University offered both graduate and undergraduate programs across a wide range of disciplines, including business, law, engineering, and sciences. In 1956, Wayne University merged with nearby Detroit City College to become Wayne State University. The newly formed institution had over 18,000 students enrolled in more than 500 degree programs.
Wayne State continued to expand throughout the 1960s and 70s with new buildings being erected on campus as well as new academic programs being introduced. By the late 80s, WSU had become a major research university with numerous research centers focusing on areas such as technology and medicine. In addition to its traditional academic offerings, WSU also has one of Michigan’s largest medical schools as well as a law school that is ranked among the best in the nation.
