Wayland Baptist University (WBU) was founded in 1908 by a small group of pioneering Baptists, led by Dr. James Henry Wayland. The university is located in Plainview, Texas and has since grown to include multiple campuses across the state and online programs that extend its reach far beyond the Lone Star State. WBU’s first classes were held in a small frame building on June 6th, 1910 with an enrollment of only 11 students. Over the next decade, enrollment steadily increased and more buildings were constructed on campus. In 1924, Wayland became fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). This was a major milestone for the school and allowed it to offer bachelor’s degrees for the first time.
In addition to expanding its academic offerings, Wayland also began to expand geographically. In 1950, it opened its first branch campus in Anchorage Alaska and an extension center in Hawaii followed soon after. By 1967, WBU had established additional campuses throughout Texas including Amarillo, Lubbock, San Antonio and Wichita Falls as well as international locations in Puerto Rico and Guam. In recent years WBU has continued to expand its presence through online learning opportunities and satellite campuses that now span three countries: United States, Canada and Kenya. Today WBU is recognized as one of the top universities in Texas with over 12000 students enrolled at all of its locations combined. See topschoolsintheusa for SAT test centers and dates in Maine.
