Washington Adventist University (WAU) was founded in 1904 as the Washington Training College, the first educational institution of its kind in the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The school was established by Ellen White, one of the founders of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. For more than a century, WAU has provided an education rooted in Christian values and serviced to students from all backgrounds and faiths.
In 1915, WAU changed its name to Washington Foreign Mission Seminary and began offering degrees in Bible and religious education. In 1962, the school adopted its current name and began offering degree programs in business administration and nursing. By 1971, WAU had become a four-year college with a variety of undergraduate programs. In 1978, it was accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.
In 1993, WAU launched its graduate program with master’s degrees in business administration and counseling psychology. Today, WAU offers more than 50 undergraduate majors and 10 graduate degree programs across four schools: School of Arts & Sciences; School of Business & Leadership; School of Health Professions; and School of Social Work & Behavioral Science. The university also has an online division that offers over 40 different online courses for adult students who need flexible scheduling options or are unable to attend classes on campus due to work or family commitments.
