Warren Wilson College was founded in 1894 by Reverend Robert Lee Moore and his wife, Mary Moore. The college began as a small school for mountain children in the Swannanoa Valley of North Carolina. Reverend Moore worked to provide education to the local community and believed that education should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their economic or social situation.
The first classes at Warren Wilson were held in a one-room log cabin on the Moores’ property. Over the next few years, more classrooms were constructed and enrollment increased rapidly. In 1898, the college became a two-year institution offering courses in literature, math, science, history and other liberal arts disciplines. In 1902, Warren Wilson College was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and became an official four-year college offering degree programs in teacher education, business administration and nursing. Throughout its history, Warren Wilson College has been dedicated to providing quality educational opportunities to its students while also promoting community service through its work program. The college’s commitment to service learning has become its hallmark—the student body is required to complete 30 hours of community service each semester as part of their academic experience.
Today Warren Wilson College is a comprehensive liberal arts college with a wide range of undergraduate majors including agriculture science, environmental studies, business management and social sciences among others.
