Virginia Wesleyan College was founded in 1961 as a private, four-year liberal arts college. It was initially named Virginia Beach-Norfolk Division of the College of William and Mary. The college was established by a local group of civic leaders and businesspersons who wanted to create an institution of higher education in the area. In 1965, the college opened its doors to its first class of students and offered its first degree program in business administration. In 1972, the college changed its name to Virginia Wesleyan College and began offering additional degree programs in the sciences, humanities, and social sciences.
Since then, Virginia Wesleyan has continued to expand its academic offerings with new degrees in fields such as psychology, nursing, education, communication studies, and more.
