Virginia Tech was founded in 1872 as Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College. Located in Blacksburg, Virginia, the college was the first land-grant institution of higher education in the state. It was created with a mission to provide educational opportunities for students from all walks of life, particularly those from rural and agricultural backgrounds. The college was established as a branch of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (VPI&SU). In 1944, it became an independent university known as Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI).
In 1970, VPI changed its name to Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (VPI&SU) to reflect its expanded academic scope. The university gained national recognition for its research contributions over the next two decades and in 1996 changed its name again to Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech). This new name captured the spirit of innovation that had been at the core of VPI since its inception. Today, Virginia Tech is one of the nation’s largest public universities with over 32,000 students enrolled on campus each year. Its main campus is located on 2,600 acres in Blacksburg and has satellite campuses located throughout the state.
