Victory University was founded in 1873 as a small private school in Memphis, Tennessee. It was originally called the Southern Bible College and was established by Reverend William H. Hardin, who wanted to provide educational opportunities for African Americans in the South. The school grew quickly and changed its name to Victory University in 1895. After the Civil War, many African Americans were unable to attend college due to financial constraints, so Victory University provided an affordable option for them. In addition to its academic offerings, Victory University offered courses that focused on vocational training and self-improvement, such as carpentry and dressmaking.

In the early 1900s, Victory University began offering classes in business administration and secretarial science as well as elective courses like music, art, and physical education. It also added a library of books on various topics such as history and literature for students to use for research projects or leisure reading. In the 1920s, the university started providing more specialized courses such as accounting and nursing programs.
