VanderCook College of Music was founded in 1909 by Dr. Wilbur Ellsworth Young and his wife, Maude. It grew out of the Chicago Normal School of Music, which had been established in 1900. The college was named after its first president, Dr. Clarence H. VanderCook, who served from 1909 to 1940 and had a profound influence on the development of music education in the United States. The college offered a three-year program for teachers and began awarding Bachelor of Music Education degrees in 1925.
