Valley City State University (VCSU) was founded in 1890 as the Valley City Normal School. It was originally established to provide teacher training for the growing population of North Dakota. The school began offering two-year teaching certificates and then expanded the program to a four-year degree in 1916. In 1922, the North Dakota Legislature changed the name to Valley City State Teachers College and authorized a full liberal arts curriculum. In 1961, Valley City State Teachers College became Valley City State College and offered its first graduate program in education. In 1987, the school was renamed Valley City State University and began offering master’s degrees in several disciplines. Today, VCSU offers over 40 undergraduate majors, including business administration, computer science, education, mathematics, nursing, psychology and social work.
