The University of Wisconsin at Whitewater was founded in 1868, making it one of the oldest universities in the state. It began as a normal school, which provided training for teachers and other educational professionals. In 1927, the university was renamed Wisconsin State Teachers College at Whitewater. In 1951, the school was renamed to Wisconsin State College at Whitewater, and then again in 1964 to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
