The University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point was founded in 1894 as the Stevens Point Normal School. The school’s mission was to train teachers for the growing population of Wisconsin. In 1926, the school changed its name to the Wisconsin State College at Stevens Point and began offering additional degree programs. In 1951, the school was renamed again to become the Wisconsin State University at Stevens Point and began offering four-year degrees in liberal arts, sciences and professional studies. In 1964, it became part of the newly formed University of Wisconsin system and was given its current name, University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point.
Since joining the UW system, UWSP has grown significantly. It now offers over 120 undergraduate majors and areas of study, more than 25 graduate programs and certificates, pre-professional programs in medicine, dentistry and law, as well as continuing education courses for adults throughout central Wisconsin. The university is also home to a number of research centers including a Center for Watershed Science & Education, a Center for Sustainable Tourism & Recreation Management and a Center for Collaborative Solutions in Business & Industry.
