The University of Wisconsin at River Falls was established in 1874 as the River Falls Normal School. The school was founded to provide teacher education for the local community and it was the first normal school of its kind in the state of Wisconsin. It offered a two-year course of study that prepared students to become teachers in rural schools. The curriculum also included science, literature, and mathematics. In 1927, the school changed its name to River Falls State Teachers College and began offering a four-year course of study leading to a Bachelor of Science degree in education. In 1951, it became part of the University of Wisconsin System and was renamed University of Wisconsin at River Falls (UWRF).
