The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) began as a teacher’s college in 1885. It was called the Wisconsin State Normal School and it offered two-year degrees to students who wanted to become teachers. In 1919, the school became the Wisconsin State Teachers College, offering four-year degrees and instruction in a variety of academic fields. The school continued to grow and expand its curriculum throughout the 1920s and 1930s, eventually becoming a university in 1959. UWM was now able to award graduate degrees, including master’s and doctorates. In 1965, UWM became part of the newly established University of Wisconsin System, which is composed of 26 public universities across the state. From that time onward, UWM has continued to grow both in size and prestige, becoming one of the top research universities in the state with more than 28,000 students enrolled annually. UWM has also expanded its research capabilities over time, becoming one of only four Carnegie Research I institutions in Wisconsin. The university continues to offer an exceptional education for students from all backgrounds while conducting groundbreaking research that advances knowledge and serves society.
