The University of Waterloo was founded in 1957 by a group of local business leaders and academics, led by Gerry Hagey. Their vision was to create an innovative university that would offer the highest quality education to its students and be a leader in research and development. The university began as the Waterloo College Associate Faculties, an affiliate of the University of Western Ontario, offering classes in engineering, mathematics, and science. In 1959, it became an independent institution known as the University of Waterloo.

In 1967, Waterloo became one of the first universities to embrace computer science education with the establishment of a Computer Science department. This was followed by the introduction of other departments such as Applied Health Sciences, Arts and Humanities, Environment and Resource Studies, Mathematics & Engineering Science and Social Work & Legal Studies.
