The University of Vermont was founded in 1791, making it the fifth oldest university in New England. It is the only university in the United States to have been founded by an independent state legislature. The original charter established a college of medicine and a university, though only the former was realized. In 1819, the University of Vermont became the first U.S. college to admit women as students, and it was one of the first universities to offer instruction in both English and French. In 1825, it became one of the first universities to offer degrees in engineering and agriculture.
