University of Toronto Acceptance Rate, Average GPA, SAT and ACT Scores

The University of Toronto was founded in 1827 when King’s College received a royal charter from King George IV. It was the first institution of higher learning in Upper Canada, and the second oldest university in Canada. The school changed its name to the University of Toronto in 1850, and began to expand rapidly. In 1853, it opened its first Faculty of Arts building and began offering professional degrees. By 1884, the university had established its first graduate school and by 1898 had opened a medical school. In 1904, Victoria College was established as an affiliated college of the University of Toronto, giving students access to additional courses and academic programs. Throughout the twentieth century, the University of Toronto continued to grow rapidly, establishing new schools and faculties as well as numerous research centers and institutes. Today, it is one of Canada’s most prestigious universities with over 60 thousand students enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs across three campuses. It is one of only three Canadian institutions that are members of the prestigious Association of American Universities (AAU). UofT has become a leader in research with over $1 billion being spent on research every year and over 100 thousand publications since 2000 alone. The university has also produced several Nobel Laureates including John Polanyi (1986), Michael Smith (1993), Ralph Steinman (2011) and Arthur McDonald (2015). Check LOCALCOLLEGEEXPLORER.COM for a list of colleges and universities in Virginia.

Admissions Stats

University of Toronto

The University of Toronto is one of the most prestigious universities in Canada, and its admissions statistics reflect this. In 2020, the university received over 85,000 applications from around the world. Of these applications, 19,000 were accepted, resulting in an acceptance rate of 22.3%. The majority of those accepted were from Ontario, followed by other provinces in Canada and international students. The average entering grade for first-year students was 90%, with the middle 80% range falling between 86-93%. This shows that the university takes a holistic approach to admissions and considers not just a student’s academic performance but their extracurricular activities and community involvement as well. In addition to academic qualifications, University of Toronto also looks at non-academic qualifications such as leadership qualities, communication skills, creativity and community engagement when making admission decisions. To further ensure diversity on campus, UofT has set aside spots for Indigenous applicants who are members of First Nations communities across Canada.
