The University of the Ozarks was founded in 1834 as the Cane Hill School, a Presbyterian preparatory school for men and women. The school changed its name to Arkansas College in 1891 and relocated to nearby Clarksville in 1907. In 1923, Arkansas College became the first college in Arkansas to admit African-American students. In 1969, the college became coeducational and changed its name to University of the Ozarks.
In 1973, under the leadership of then-President Dr. Charles D. Foster, the university adopted a new curriculum that included study abroad opportunities. This curriculum opened up new possibilities for students to explore different cultures and gain a better understanding of global issues. Since then, University of the Ozarks has become one of only two universities in Arkansas offering semester-long study abroad programs for all students. The university also offers short-term international travel experiences through faculty-led courses and other opportunities such as service learning projects and internships abroad.
