The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) was established in 1914 as the State School of Mines and Metallurgy. It was founded to provide education and research in mining and metallurgical engineering, and to develop a mining industry in the El Paso area. The school was also responsible for providing technical training to local miners. In 1919, it became part of the University of Texas system, and its name was changed to The University of Texas School of Mines and Metallurgy. In 1949, it was renamed again as Texas Western College of The University of Texas. The college offered its first bachelor’s degrees in 1950 and its first graduate programs in 1956.
In 1967, the college gained university status, becoming The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). Since then, UTEP has grown significantly; today it offers more than 100 undergraduate degrees, 70 master’s degrees, 22 doctoral programs, and numerous certificate programs. UTEP is now recognized as one of the nation’s premier public research universities with a commitment to providing access to quality education for all students regardless of their economic or social background.
