The University of Texas at Dallas was established in 1969 as the Graduate Research Center of the Southwest. It was founded by Erik Jonsson, a successful entrepreneur and philanthropist who served three terms as mayor of Dallas. Jonsson’s vision was to create a university that would be driven by innovation and research, with a focus on preparing students for the future. The university began its first semester in 1971 with just over 400 students enrolled in graduate programs in engineering, natural sciences, humanities, and social sciences. Over the next decade, UT Dallas began to expand its academic offerings to include undergraduate degrees and eventually doctoral programs as well. Today, UT Dallas is part of the larger University of Texas system and offers more than 140 degree programs across seven schools: Arts & Humanities; Behavioral & Brain Sciences; Economics, Political & Policy Sciences; Erik Jonsson School of Engineering & Computer Science; Interdisciplinary Studies; Natural Sciences & Mathematics; and School of Management. With more than 22,000 students enrolled from over 100 countries around the world, UT Dallas is now one of the largest universities in Texas and is ranked among the top universities in the nation for research activity.
