The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) was founded in 1895 as the Arlington College. It was a private two-year college that provided instruction in a variety of subjects including English, mathematics, and science. In 1917, the college was purchased by the University of Texas System and renamed the North Texas Agricultural College. During this time, the school’s focus shifted to agricultural studies and it became a four-year institution. In 1927, it was renamed again as North Texas State Teachers College and its emphasis shifted to teacher education. In 1949, it was renamed again as Arlington State College and began offering graduate programs in addition to its undergraduate offerings. By 1959, the school had become one of the largest universities in Texas with an enrollment of over 10,000 students. In 1967, it became part of The University of Texas System and adopted its current name: The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA). Today UTA is one of the top universities in the country with an enrollment of more than 50,000 students pursuing degrees from over 140 degree programs across 10 colleges.
