The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) was founded in 1886 as a private university. It was initially called the University of Chattanooga, and was established by the Methodist Episcopal Church South. The university grew rapidly, and by 1907 it had achieved college status. In 1909, the state of Tennessee acquired control of the university, renaming it to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Since then, UTC has become a leading public university in the region and serves more than 11,000 students annually.
