The University of Southern Indiana (USI) was founded in 1965 as a public, four-year university. It is located in Evansville, Indiana, and is part of the Indiana state university system. USI was established as an extension of Indiana State University (ISU). Initially serving only juniors and seniors, USI began admitting freshman and sophomores in 1972. The first bachelor’s degrees were granted in 1977.
In 1985, USI became an independent institution with its own board of trustees. Around this time, the university also began to expand its academic offerings, adding master’s and doctoral degrees. The 1990s saw further growth for USI with the addition of several new buildings on campus and the growth of student enrollment to over 5,000 students.
