The University of South Carolina Upstate was established in 1967 as a two-year branch campus of the University of South Carolina. It was originally known as “USC Spartanburg” and was located in downtown Spartanburg. The school offered only junior and senior level classes, but by 1970 it had expanded to offer freshman and sophomore classes as well. In 1976, the campus moved to its current location in the city of Spartanburg, and the name changed to University of South Carolina Upstate. The school continued to expand over the years, adding new academic programs such as business administration, nursing, computer science, education, and more. In 1997, USC Upstate became an independent four-year university offering bachelor’s degrees in more than 50 programs. Today USC Upstate is a thriving institution with an enrollment of over 6,000 students pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees in more than 90 fields of study.
