The University of South Carolina at Beaufort (USCB) was founded in 1959 as a two-year college. It was originally named the University of Beaufort and was located in the historic city of Beaufort, South Carolina. The university was established to provide educational opportunities to local residents and to help them transition from high school to college. In 1994, USCB became part of the University of South Carolina system and changed its name accordingly.
