The University of San Francisco (USF) was founded in 1855 by a group of Italian-born priests, led by Father Anthony Maraschi. The university was originally known as St. Ignatius Academy and was the first school to be established in the city of San Francisco. USF began as a one-room schoolhouse, with just five students and two teachers. Over the years, USF grew steadily and added new courses and programs. In 1859, USF became a chartered university and began offering both undergraduate and graduate degrees. By the turn of the century, USF had become an important center for Catholic education in California.
In 1912, USF moved to its current location on Lone Mountain overlooking downtown San Francisco. This move enabled the university to expand its campus and add additional academic programs such as law, dentistry, nursing, business administration, education, engineering and more. In addition to academics, USF also developed several student organizations such as fraternities and sororities which are still active today. Throughout its history USF has been recognized for its commitment to social justice and service learning opportunities for students which have helped shape the character of both our city and our country over time.
